No surprise needing CCMOS as there are things stored in areas that may
end up being remapped to other uses with newer firmware and clearing is
STOP when upgrading for that reason.

popped out the CMOS BATTERY (could not spot the clear cmos jumpers at the
time).
Anyway THAT did the trick. I had upgraded the bios about a week ago and I
finally remember an Asus board I had, that I had to clear the CMOS after a
certain point as simply restoring to the default bios settings wouldn't do
it. Don't know if there are lingering artifacts or what but it's great to
have my old machine back, lol. 10 minutes to encode a DVD rather than 4
hours
