Boy Chris, I really appreciate your comments, it is lowering my learning
curve and making 'some' mistakes that either won't work or otherwise be an
utter waste of time because they were inappropriate.

Your comment that VHD and TV tuners etc don't work is something I did not
know ...

With that in mind, 1))) reviewing or evaluating apps seems appropriate for a
VHD installation. 2))) running an app in a protected environment as a vhd -
ie - if I don't set up networking or internet services on a particular vhd -
then I don't have to worry about fire walling that installation as it does
not know how to communicate with the outside world. 3))) It seems upgrading
an OS as a VHD is somewhat a pain in the ... if I don't set up outside
communication as MS seems to want everyone to use the auto update and I have
not had complete success finding updates for the non-currently-operational
OS. 4))) Installing server on a VHD seems a decent way of providing network
services to others on the network (home 5 user) without the expense/space of
a dedicated machine. 5))) the obvious of running an app that will run on a
particular OS such as Win98 for some games.

You mentioned TV not working on a VHD - how about
Modems,
Scanners,
Share storage arrays, drives, etc.
Sharing a service from 1 VHD with either the host OS or other VHD's. (Right
now WinXP64 does not support any USB modems which is the type I want to use)
So if I set up the modem as a shared service on a VHD, it would be nice if
WinXP64 could just use the modem service until drivers become available for
USB modems.

Well if you could comment if any of my 1-5 are misguided and other classes
of equipment that does not fair well as a VHD,,,, I would appreciate it.

"OK, so you're thinking about using MCE as the "HOST" OS (the OS in which
"the
"VPC application runs) and XP Pro as a "GUEST" (the OS installed on a VHD as
"example). This is fine. You can make VHDs for whatever you want,
"including
"a VHD for MCE2005 (though it will be not very functional, as TV Tuners and
"other items do not work in VirtualPC mode).
"
"Because the significant differences, you can't really use a VHD as
"something
"to clone to/from your main boot drive (HOST) you can, however, keep clones
"of the same VHDs for use on one PC in multiple installs.

"
"Ok, from an OS side of things, ie protection, good clean install etc.
"
"Lets say I do most of my think in WinXP MCE 2005.
"
"So I install WinXP - bare, with the various updates to the primary drive.
"Then all the OS on Virtual Drives.
"
"Then all I have to do is make an image of the primary drive to restore
"basic
"WinXP. An then just copy VHD's for each OS - including WinXP 2005 MCE. Then
"I just have to recopy the VHD back should I not like the way the current
"version is performing, etc.
"
"To take it one step beyond. Lets say I have a nice version of WinXp MCE
"2005, rename and copy the VHD and have a second version available to
"experiment with. Add programs, settings, etc. anyway, instead of worrying
"about uninstalling bad programs or restoring setting, I just go and rename,
"copy WinXP MCE again and start with a fresh slate? Right now I went with an
"ATI software upgrade that went south, would be nice to start over in a
"matter of minutes. Am I missing something?

""Yes. In fact, you can "trade" VHDs from one machine to another and they
