Just a few thoughts..

(1) Right now, you can score AMD X2 combos and builds cheap.. and very
effective. The X2/3600+ & a good board or a good build is easy to get hold
of cheaply, and makes for a good build. It's not going to compare with a
Core2Duo, but you're spending a hundred less. So there you go.
(2) If you can go for the extra $$, go for a E6600. The E6300/E6400 are
good performers.. but it's a big jump to the E6600 without a giant leap in
price. And the E6600 is a great bang for the buck.
(3) 680i chipsets may be the rage, but the 650i performs IDENTICALLY with
one card, and even with two, in any benchmark I've tried, the difference is
almost non-existant. So, going with a 650i gets you a board that (a) uses
less power, thus makes less heat (b) saves you another $100, (c) is a lot
less picky about RAM. If you really need uber-elite, the 680i is it. But
if you're building on your own or if you want value, the 650i is probably
it.
(4) All AMD prices will shift crazily at the end of this week as the 6000+
ships, and AMD has a few other new chips coming out. AMD is also offering
OEMs pretty aggressive deals if they combine AMD CPU + ATI(AMD) Chipset MBs.
So, you may see some people bundle those together at good value.

Just some thoughts. But, you can spend as you like ;)
