If it is like clockwork, it might be a non-maskable interrupt... Try to see what you are running, and kill off some stuff as a test...
You might be "carrying along" the problem by always running a
"bad" (as in poorly written) program in install after install...
(I think I have some of those myself... <grin>..)

It probably is the hardware but I can't think of anything that could cause it to freeze up like that but not crash.
