Several days ago, I switched it to a USB 2.0 connection and it has been up
since. So, if it is a thermal issue, it may just be with the FW chipset.

I have 250GB WD drive in an aluminum fan-less case (Rosewill RX30-U2FAB
Black 3.5" USB2.0 +1394a + 1394b External Enclosure). I have never had a
problem with large transfers. When it was hooked up via FW, I transferred
about 45GBs in one go with no issues.

Thanks,
Bobby

Let me second the thermal issue and throw in that I
had no end of issues with XP
(I know you said Vista) & it's FW support. Do you also
have issues doing long
transfers & getting Delayed Write Failures? That would
be more of a sign of
thermal than just disappearing while idle. Check Event
Viewer for errors would
where I'd start.

That said I would never use a fanless plastic case for
a 7200RPM drive and have
been closely monitoring the fanless aluminum IcyDock I
bought after the problems
multiple Speedzter3 cases caused me.

I've only had one cable issue and that was a 4 to 6
cable from Belkin that just
gave up the ghost several months of use. Moronic these
laptop 4pin 1394 ports!
