You talk as if PPoE is an on-going or intensive task!
It's not, so what's the gain?

Leave the firewall functions on the less configurable
modem to lower the load on 
the router? No point there either. the router is built
to do it, still way 
under-utilized (based on it's status page) even
running the firewall, and a hell 
of a lot more configurable & verbose!

It makes ZERO sense to use the modem for more than
modem functions when the most 
common brand and model DSL modems is Westell vs. using
a good linksys router 
with 3rd party firmware.
