I don't want to guess or experiment and screw up my working network
so yeah, I am stumped but here is some questions.
I won't be using the SFP port at all ever... correct?
I will have to use the Unifi software to <assign> the cable modem to
a particular port ...one of the four normal ports which will only
leave 3 other ports....correct>
I already have the Unifi software installed for my Ubiquiti Airmax
... so if I plug the router into the existing managing computer with
the Unifi software will the software automatically find the router?
Then I set it up and finally shut down everything on the network,
install the new EdgeMax and bring everything back on line.
What do I need to know about setting up the EdgeMax

to look into changing to that firmware.
my plan is to leave the old Trendnet where it is as a switch. It is a
particularly visually appealing router... OK I admit it .... I have a
blinky light fetish!

That is a nice little router, I've installed that very model at one of our
customer's homes. When you configure the router you're going to assign an
X# port to the WAN (generally X0) and you will plug your cable modem
there. I've done a bit of work on these devices, if you're 100% stumped on
it, let me know and I'll help you out.
For your old Trendnet router, does it support DD-WRT? Might want to look
into changing to that firmware.
Thanks!
