I have found that crashes with steam aren't generally steam, but rather hardware or something else. I certainly hope an uninstall/reinstall resolves the issue, but I wouldn't be holding my breath on it.
To answer your question, worst he'll do is lose his save games and have to download stuff again. You can generally back up the save games though. Backing up the games might be counter productive if you think it's steam causing the crashes, you might want to download the games again just to be sure. Have you tried to do "Verify Integrity of game Cache"?
