[H] Simple video editing

I have a bunch of AVIs and MP4s I took during my last vacation, and I 
want to edit them (basically cut them down and create one long 
video).  I guess it would be nice to do some sort of transition, but 
my big needs just the cutting, pasting, and the ability to remove the 
sound track (replacing it would be cool, but not critical).  Is there 
an easy program that will do this?
