Bino,
You might wish to investigate a NAS solution:

Their are other choices from Synology, Buffalo, etc.
Extrapolating your 500GB data bulk to 3-4 other laptops looks to be
~2.0TB+. I'd look
to data xfr via a private LAN. In the NAS space, USB2.0 is very slow and
seems to often
trouble prone. Yes, you have a real tough nut to crack............. :)

Hey guys, so I'm looking for the fastest way to back up all the data on my
current laptop's 500GB HD to an external drive. In this case the damn laptop
is only USB 2.0 (no 3.) and no eSATA ports or I'd use that to an external dock.
So would I be better off using USB 2.0 or some mechanism that transfers over
GigE? And which mechanism could I use to make the robust/fastest copy? Ghost?
Would I be able to put the ghost'ed drive in an external USB case and connect
it in and browse for files and stuff? Or Acronis TrueImage? I need to do this
for 3-4 older laptops so I can collate the data from them all and then back it
all up to another location so I don't have single points of failure for my data
which I'm currently exposed to.
I tried doing Windows backup on the 500GB HD on this machine and it was taking
15 hrs + and I was like no way-I need to use the machine, so looking for
something fast and reliable-and that I can use on/for multiple machines.
Thanks guys-hope everyone is well and has plans for a fun/great fourth!
