I think the issue is that the metro desktop is separate from the standard desktop.
If there was no standard desktop and instead there was only metro then the issue would have been less, in the sense that you either like it or hate it. Right now you are forced to use both and the current implementation is clunky to say the least. But I like the concept of the metro desktop and I think it needs a lot of polish but at least for me it's a step in the right direction.
