If you don't mind sharing your letter, I'd do the same thing. This

Here's my current letter. It probably needs work, but I think it
gets the point across.

Hi Guys,
I really appreciate your site, as I know the effort that
goes into creating and keeping a site going. I do have one
complaint, though. Your use of captcha for your registration is
really frustrating. I understand the importance of blocking bots,
but it took me almost five minutes to get registered because of the
complexity of your captcha. I had to refresh the image five to ten
times on each attempt and even then it took me four attempts to get
the thing spelled right (and of course, each time the screen
refreshed, I had to re-enter my password, making the entire thing
even more irritating). I even tried the audio captcha, but frankly,
I can't even tell what language the people are speaking, let alone
hazard a guess at what they are saying.
You have great content here, and I really enjoy it, but you
must know you're driving people away from your site. I'm extremely
computer savvy (30 years of programming/technical work), and I almost
gave up. I'm willing to bet a lot of people with less experience or
patience just give up.
There are other, better options to block bots. Here are a
couple pages with alternatives:

Thanks for your time, and hopefully by changing your
registration system to something more human friendly, you'll get even
more registrations on your site.
Sincerely,
