I meant it more in the same vein as there are people who closely identify
with a particular brand (Apple, Intel, AMD, Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburg
Steelers, Boston Red Sox, Ford, Chevy, Xbox, Playstation) and become
extremely loyal to that brand (fanboys), whereas there are others who just
buy whatever happens to be the best fit for their particular needs at the
time. I'm not making a normative argument here - there are plenty of good
reasons to take either approach - just that a good portion of people seem
to be hardwired for one or the other. And both camps are pretty good at
making the "any intelligent person should be doing x" while not really
understanding that a lot of this is not based on just an intellectual
exercise. Our decision to identify with a particular brand (or not to) is
a mix of economic, cultural, emotional, and other factors.

That said, I will say that ALL of these phones are walled gardens to
various degrees and will becoming increasingly so over time. People may
hate Apple for their "big brother" approach to app approval and their tight
fist on the development of their OS, but it has demonstrated real security
benefits over the last few years. As more and more of our lives are
contained in our mobile phones and people begin to realize just how
insecure and vulnerable they are, that will become an increasingly
important issue.
