Duncan,
The PCI 3.0 slots are backward compatible with version 2.x and 1.x. I have
tested this on an Asus P8Z77-v Pro board here at my work. I need compatibility
so I can insert SAS and RAID controllers into the computer for my work.
I really like the Asus P8Z77-V Pro board. Runs nice! This baby has 32GB of RAM
in it and has a lot of storage options. THe only thing the motherboard is
lacking is eSATA on the back plane, they do give you a expansion slot with USB
2.0 and eSATA connector on it.

I notice that all of the "Z77" series Asus m/b's come with varying
numbers of
PCIE v3.0 slots. Darn!
Is a PCIE v3.0 slot BACKWARD compatible to v2.0 and v1.0??????
I sense some trouble. Wondering.
Thank you,
Duncan
