Subject: [ha-Safran]: The Jewish Question

Save 25% on the Literature on the Roots of Modern Anti-Semitism 1780 - 1918 THE JEWISH QUESTION

Organized alphabetically by author , this collection provides research into
prejudice with access to approximately 600 German-language publications
ranging from 1780 to the end of the First World War. This collection of
rare, at times unique books, writings and pamphlets, held by the Bibliothek
des Zentrums für Antisemitismusforschung der Technischen Universität
Berlin,
represents a singular body of sources for research into the emergence of
modern anti-Semitism.

KEY FACTS
* Edited by Wolfgang Benz, on behalf of the Zentrum für
Antisemitismusforschung
* Most of the anti-Semitic writers of the 19th century are forgotten -
their writings are either widely scattered or no longer available
* Since the late 18th century, the "Jewish Question" was a key
issue, in Germany and all over Europe
* Initially untainted by anti-Semitic resentments, the focus was on
ways of legal, political and social equality for the Jewish minority, which
was finally established in the constitution of the German Reich in 1871
* Sociological characteristics of the Jewish minority, their living
conditions and professional structures were studied to demonstrate reasons
for the lack of Jewish integration into society
* During the 19th century a new kind of hostility towards Jews
emerged, propagated and justified by writings employing racist
argumentation

* In the guise of socio-Darwinian and racist argumentation, claiming
to be the result of 'scientific' insights, more and more aggressive voices
were raised calling for the exclusion of the Jewish minority
* As incunables of modern anti-Semitism, the originals are part of the
collection of the Bibliothek des Zentrums für Antisemitismusforschung of
the
TU Berlin
* Some works are the only remaining copies worldwide while others are
suffering from the decay of paper to such an extent that, in the future,
they will only be accessible via microfiche
* The microfilming of these rare and endangered writings guarantees
international and German researchers future use of these works as primary
sources

Guide Available- Access to the microfiche edition is facilitated by a
companion volume containing an academic introduction by Wolfgang Benz plus
a
bibliography of the texts on microfilm
