NAME:

TITLE:          Library Assistant, Senior - 50%

GENERAL SUMMARY:

This Library Assistant, Senior must be able to read either Hebrew and/or 
Yiddish to perform the following functions: bibliographic searching of 
Hebrew and Yiddish language materials against library holdings; creating 
and updating acquisitions records; receiving and processing Hebrew and 
Yiddish materials acquired through various plans; resolving receipt 
problems and approving invoices for payment; searching the cataloging 
databases (OCLC or RLIN) for useable bibliographic records; providing 
language assistance as needed in Technical Services.

The incumbent in this position works under the supervision of the head of 
the Monographic Receiving/Copy Cataloging Unit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.      Sorts materials received by invoice; performs bibliographic 
searching on Hebrew and Yiddish language materials for duplication and 
verification using the ASU Online Catalog and RLIN.

2.      Receives library materials using automated system; creates and 
updates brief bibliographic and order records in automated system for 
Hebrew and Yiddish materials; recognizes inconsistencies and takes 
appropriate actions based on established guidelines; approves invoices for 
payment processing.

3.      Searches the materials on the ASU Online Catalog, and verifies them 
against invoices and online order record.

4.      Recognizes and resolves problems with duplicate records; separates 
added copy and monographic and serial added volume receipts from new titles.

5.      Identifies, verifies and/or adds correct purchase order numbers on 
vendor or in-house forms, adding price information in U.S. dollars as 
appropriate and/or volume information in English when necessary.

6.      Records receiving statistics; distributes materials according to 
established guidelines.

7.      Transliterates orders and claimed titles to Hebrew and/or Yiddish 
for vendor's easy understanding; helps write letters to vendor; prepares 
rejected books for return.

8.      Searches online cataloging database (OCLC or RLIN) for useable 
bibliographic records.

9.      Assists catalogers by providing language expertise for descriptive 
cataloging questions and the process of establishing authoritative forms of 
entry.

10.     Assists in organizing the arrearage of material in Hebrew and Yiddish.

11.     Performs other duties as assigned appropriate to this classification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

-       Knowledge of general library procedures and practices.
-       Ability to enter, edit, list and maintain records in an automated 
library system.
-       Writing and reading knowledge of Hebrew and Yiddish.
-       Ability to exercise good judgement and work independently.
-       Ability to organize and manage multiple workflows, and work with 
details.
-       Good communication and interpersonal skills.
-       Good analytical and problem solving skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
-       Two years of college education AND one year related library 
experience; OR,
-       Three years related library experience; OR,
-       Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from 
which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
-       Language background and/or training at a level sufficient for 
working effectively with materials in Hebrew and/or Yiddish.
-       Demonstrated ability to follow instructions.
-       Ability to exercise good judgement and work independently.
-       Ability to organize and manage multiple workflows.
-       Demonstrated ability to work with detail.
-       Communication and interpersonal skills.
-       Good analytical and problem solving skills.

Preferred:
-       Experience with OCLC or RLIN and/or other automated library systems.
-       Familiarity with Library of Congress romanization system.
-       Experience in a library technical service work environment.
