Safranot & safranim, As someone who has praised the benefits of the Internet in the past in my Cyberspace columns in AJL Newsletter, it was shocking for me to experience first-hand the "dark side of using the Internet".
My Yahoo account is no longer my own to control. Use whichever term you deem appropriate - hijacked, stolen, hacked. So, for at least the time being, please send any e-mail correspondence to me at this address : [EMAIL PROTECTED] When I first set up this account, I had intended it to be for the exclusive use of the AJL chapter &/or the chapter president. I am currently chapter president, so I feel OK about using it for at least the next 2 years. It is infuriating to me that to the powers-that-be at Yahoo!, the burden of proof that I am who I say I am and that (until 3 days ago) the account was mine and only mine, is on me and NOT on the cyber-thief's. It is also distressing that once a person has logged into an account, they can immediately change the zip code, which is one of the fields Yahoo uses to establish ownership. I faxed Yahoo's security department about this yesterday, but have yet to hear back from them. I would be one of the first ones to acknowledge that anyone can send a message claiming to be someone else. I have done such "fraud" myself once or twice (though never maliciously). However, I can provide so much evidence that [EMAIL PROTECTED] = Steven Bergson and that I am he that there shouldn't be any doubt in their minds about it. Though it's very time-consuming, it's relatively easy for me to move my safran-can webpages and to change the e-mail hyperlinks in all of my website files so that people send their messages to my ajl-ontario address, instead of to to my safran-can one. What I _cannot_ do, of course, is change any of the printed documents that already list my safran-can e-mail and website address (e.g. books, business cards, conference handouts, conference programs, journal articles, magazine articles, library directories, newspaper articles, newsletters, etc.) It goes without saying that if any of you has even a little bit of shlep with someone at Yahoo!, your asking them to help me out would be much, much appreciated.
