Subject: Question regarding Jewish Liturgy Bibliography

Dear Etta Gold,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I am a second-year library school student at McGill University, Montreal. Last year, for as a final project component, I produced a bibliography of Sephardic Machzurim and Siddurim for the period of 1960-1999. The focus of the project (for a Collection Development class) was to evaluate the prayer book collection of our local Jewish Library; my bibliography was used as a checklist for evaluating the Sephardic aspect of this collection. I had assembled the bibliography by searching the holdings of the Library of Congress and those of the Jewish Theological Seminary; the bibliography has 102 items in total.

My professor for this class, Dr. Martin Cohen, Western European Languages Bibliographer for McGill University Libraries, has urged me to find an appropriate forum for the publication of this checklist. While I had first scoffed at the idea (after all, anyone can do a suitable search on the OPACs I used), Dr. Cohen pointed out that my effort can benefit libraries with collectionsand collection interestsin Jewish Liturgy. Further, compiling the bibliography was fairly labour-intensive process and, as far as I know, original work. (As you may imagine, I spent time looking for published bibliographies in this field and none were found. The following four were consulted:

Bunis, David M. Sephardi studies: a research bibliography incorporating Judezmo language, literature, and folklore, and historical background. Garland Pub. (New York: 1981).

Hessel, Carolyn Starman The whole Sephardic catalog: a guide to resources and references for educators and lay readers. Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education (N.Y.: 1992).

Singerman, Robert. The Jews in Spain and Portugal: a bibliography. Garland Pub. (New York: 1975).

Singerman, Robert. Spanish and Portuguese Jewry: a classified bibliography. Greenwood Press (Westport, Conn.: 1993). )

My professor mentioned your organization (Association of Jewish Libraries) in particular as one possible forum for publication. I had decided to write to you in particular as Im sure that, as the person responsible for the accreditation program, you have a wide knowledge of the world of Judaica bibliographies. Do you have any suggestions for publication possibilities within your organization? (Does the process of accreditation involve consulting specialized bibliographies?)

Sincerely,

Zeev Schneider.
