A LITTLE TORAH'S JOURNEY

As he traveled through space, Ilan Ramon, Israel's first
astronaut, held a miniature Torah in the palm of his hand that he showed to
the world.

"This is a small Torah scroll that a young boy received from a
Rabbi sixty years ago in the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp," he
announced, holding up the Torah for the cameras. "The Rabbi used it to

Sylvia is the author of over a dozen titles, including this year's
Sydney Taylor Honor Award and the World Storytelling Award.

representative of all the Jewish people. During his flight on the space
shuttle, Ilan ate only kosher food, kept the Shabbat, and even made Kiddush
on the wine. He took a Mezuzah, donated by Holocaust survivors, with him
into space.

And he took a little Torah scroll&
