The direction of "Maghreb" depends on where you're standing. I thought 
"Maghreb"
meant "west" as in "west of Jerusalem all the way to the Atlantic Ocean". 
There's
another word for "east of Jerusalem to the Great Wall of China". "Magreb" 
is the
term we use in Spain and has nothing to do with the religion of those who 
live in
the northern part of Africa (which is west of Jerusalem).

However David Hirsch of UCLA should throw in his 2cents worth. He's a guy 
in the
know about these things.
