AJL Members, If you have any comments please let me know before June 1st.
Thanks. Caroline Miller AJL representative to NISO ------------ Forwarded Message ------------ Date: Monday, March 01, 2004 6:16 PM -0500 From: Pat Harris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: NISO Voting Members <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Ballot on the Revised ISBN: DIS 2108 Dear NISO members, The revised ISO standard International Standard book Number, DIS 2108,is now out for ballot. A PDF of DIS 2108 is on the NISO website in the Voting Members section. The ballot will close: June 1, 2004. NISO, as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to TC 46 is required to submit the U.S. vote on DIS 2108. All NISO voting members are TAG-members. You are, therefore, invited to vote and comment. Your comments will be considered in shaping the U.S. response. DIS 2108 changes the ISBN number significantly: *The ISBN is expanded from 10-digits to 13-digits. This change increases the pool of numbers available for assignment and aligns the ISBN system with product numbering conventions used globally. *In addition, the section on "Assignment of the ISBN" has been expanded (see Section 5) and a section on Metadata has been added (see Annex E). Other ISBN Resources: If you have any questions on the standard or its implementation there are two good resources available to you: *The International ISBN Agency has issued the first set of implementation guidelines for the 13-digit ISBN: http://www.isbn-international.org/revision.html. These Guidelines are intended to provide guidance for all ISBN user sectors and to help organizations prepare for implementation of the new 13-digit ISBN format in January 2007. These guidelines may be subject to further development so please bookmark that site for updates (instead of copying the guidelines). *A set of Frequently Asked Questions explaining the changes to the ISBN system is available on the Web at: http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/iso/tc46sc9/isbn.htm. ANSI Notice ANSI requires that the following notice be shared with all TAG members: "Permission is granted by the American National Standards Institute to electronically reproduce this draft International Standard (DIS 2108) for the purpose of review and comment related to the preparation of the U.S. position. All other rights are reserved." Appreciations Finally, a team of dedicated standards professionals from the book and library community have worked together since early-2002 to revise, expand, and refine the ISBN. Congratulations to the U.S. representatives who have worked long and hard to get us to the DIS in only two years: Michael Cairns (R. R. Bowker), Richard Stark (Barnes and Noble), Laurie Stark (Random House), Albert Simmonds (Dawson Simmonds, Inc.), Wendell Lotz (Ingram). This two-year timeline may be a new land-speed record for ISO standards development! REMINDER The ballot deadline is June 1, 2004. You are encouraged to vote on the website. -- ************************************ Pat Harris Executive Director National Information Standards Organization (NISO) 4733 Bethesda Avenue, Suite 300 Bethesda, MD 20814 USA T: 301-654-2512 ** Mobile: 202-258-3296 Fax: 301-654-1721 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] url: http://www.niso.org ---------- End Forwarded Message ---------- Caroline R.
