Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies _____________________________________________________________________ Teaching and Learning About America?s Response to the Holocaust Sixty years after the Holocaust, questions concerning America?s response to the Nazi genocide still command widespread public interest. What could President Roosevelt have done--and why did he turn away? Under what circumstances should the U.S. promote human rights abroad today? What lessons should be learned from the news media?s scant coverage of the Holocaust? Why were most church leaders silent? To explore such issues, The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies is sponsoring Teaching and Learning About America?s Response to the Holocaust, a one-day conference on Sunday, May 16, 2004. The Institute is named after Professor David Wyman, the distinguished historian whose 1984 bestseller, The Abandonment of the Jews, is the definitive expose of the Roosevelt administration?s response to the Nazi genocide. The Institute carries on the legacy of Prof. Wyman?s work through research, education, and public programs. The conference will be held at the Ramaz Lower School Building, 125 East 85th Street, New York City, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sessions will include: * The Abandonment of the Jews: An Overview - Remarks by Prof. David Wyman. *Americans Who Spoke Out - a panel featuring sons and daughters of Hiram Bingham IV, Stella Adler, Peter Bergson, Noah Golinkin and others who spoke out during the Holocaust. * Teaching About the American Media?s Coverage of the Holocaust - a panel discussion featuring veteran correspondent Bernard Kalb and Prof. Laurel Leff, author of a forthcoming book about the New York Times and the Holocaust. * America?s Response to the Holocaust: A Workshop for Teachers - led by Judi Freeman, the Seevak Chair in History at Boston Latin High School. * They Looked Away - a screening of the powerful new documentary on the Allies? refusal to bomb Auschwitz - with producers Stuart Erdheim and Paul Miller on hand to answer questions. * Special exhibits: Cartoonists Against the Holocaust: Art in the Service of Humanity ?We Will Never Die?
