Dear Colleagues - It is rare that we sent a posting in which we personally recommend books, but I only just now got in a copy of a book I can only rave over!
It is: Funny, It Doesn't Sound Jewish : How Yiddish Songs and Synagogue Melodies Influenced Tin Pan Allwey, Broadway, and Hollywood, by Jack Gottlieb. SUNY Press, co-published with The Library of Congress, 2004 ISBN 0-7914-6101-7 Over 300 pages, and 30 cm in height, AND an accompanying CD of more than 70 minutes of musical example, it is replete with musical examples [and you really do not have to know how to read music] and photos. In time for the 350th anniversary observances. I am deeply impressed with the scholarship and the amazing layout. I am only saddened, however, that it did not come out in time for our conference last week, for crying out loud! I think many members will want not only for their libraries, but their own bookshelf at home.
