Of course, I.B. Singer includes evil magical beings, these being inspired doubtless by Old World Jewish superstitious lore. The story of The Witch and The Rabbi, which my husband and I once performed for his (Conservative) congregation, complete with antique menoras and amulets, is an illustration. Children and adults both were delighted by this story, and the performance actually drew kids to synagogue on a Shabbat which--outside on the street--was just another old paper/plastic/sugary Halloween.
