The library of the Leo Baeck Institute (LBI) in New York is looking for
an experienced full-time librarian for cataloging and acquisition.
Founded in 1955 the LBI is a research institute whose library and
archives offer the most comprehensive documentation for the study of
German Jewish history. The 70,000 volume library is recognized as the
foremost reference source in its field.

  Responsibilities include:
*       Catalog German and English print and non-print materials using
Ex-Libris' Aleph 500 integrated library system.  Perform copy and
original cataloging using Marc 21 and Library of Congress Subject
headings and classification. Additional responsibilities include record
maintenance and to contribute to the development and maintenance of
authority files and to establish original authority records for names
and subjects.
*       Prepare and process new acquisitions including bibliographical
research, data entry, processing of new shipments
*       Conduct reference services once a week at the reference desk of
our shared reading room with the partners of the Center for Jewish
History. Assist researchers with use of archival and library collections
and be responsible for managing remote reference queries, and respond to
research queries
*       Carry out other professional duties as needed as well as to
participate in committees
The cataloger reports to the Head Librarian.

Qualifications:
*       MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent experience.
*       Cataloging or cataloging-related experience.  Experience using
Exlibris' Aleph system or another automated library system is highly
desirable as is a working knowledge of AACR2,  RLIN21, and Library of
Congress classification and subject headings
*       Excellent reading knowledge of German
*       Interest in German-Jewish history
*       A strong commitment to customer service, excellent oral,
written, and interpersonal communication skills
*       The position requires an ability to work independently as well
as to work well with a team
