A few weeks ago, I asked about 'Jonah: a veggie tale'. I received several answers; about half in favor of acquiring it and about half thought it left out too much or was misdirected. I haven't acquired it. I'm still thinking though because there really aren't a lot of films for children. Most of them seem to fall into two categories, either they re too cute for words or they are so out of date their slang and their references are unknown to our present generation of children. However, I'm writing because I've found four delightful films and have acquired them. The films are the 'Agent Emes' series by Leibel Cohen. They are funny but also have substance. I am planning to promote one about Rosh ha Shonah in the september synagogue newsletter. Agent Emes is a boy who goes to yeshiva by day but at night he fights the sinister plots of Lo-Tov who is always trying to subvert Judaism. He wears a raincoat a la Columbo. Each film is about 30 minutes long so they could even be shown in a classroom or at home as the base of a discussion.I watched them with two of our grandchildren. They loved them and had lots of questions. We in our library can be quite lonely over the summer when the Hebrew school is out, but I'm sure these films will go out and come back a lot when fall comes. Mr. Cohen has also made a short film called 'Advice and Dissent' which appealed to us very much because it also is charming, instructive, well acted and best of all about funding a library. I showed it to whomever was in the synagogue yesterday morning, maybe half a dozen people who all liked it very much. Its twenty minutes long, a sort of short story. The actors include Eli Wallach and John Pankow. Marcia Schertz Temple Israel Portsmouth, N.H.
