BORGES AND THE KABBALAH: PATHS TO THE WORD

TUESDAY JANUARY 16, 2007 AT 11:30 AM

The Library of Congress, Madison Building, Pickford Theater

Program is free and open to the public

Borges and the Kabbalah: Paths to the Word is a dialogue between
image and text. Argentinian artist, Mirta Kupferminc, in Buenos
Aires, and Argentine literary critic, Associate Provost and Professor
at the University of Maryland, Saul Sosnowski, have shared the
challenge of weaving together and forging links between Borges and
the Kabbalah through different modes of expression. More than a
dialogue, this has been a "trialogue," as both worked from Borges'
texts; Borges, in turn, crafted his literary versions from a number
of fundamental Kabbalistic notions.

Mirta Kupferminc and Saul Sosnowski will be present to discuss their
book, Borges and the Kabbalah: Paths to the Word. A book for
bibliophiles, it integrates Kupfermincs original etchings, Borges own
work, traditional Jewish texts, and commentaries and poems written by
Sosnowski. The work is characterized by an appearance of order, but
is in reality both complete and open to other options. Borges and
the Kabbalah, as the creators themselves suggest, leads us to paths
that, as the Kabbalah, in its realm, and Borges in his literature,
create never-ending journeys. A short documentary explaining the
physical making and some not evident meanings of the book will also be shown.
