A friend asked me to send this. Yael Penkower Studies in the Five Megilot By Dr. Gavriel Cohn
The Lookstein Center and the Jewish Agency Eliner Library (In Hebrew) In these studies, readers will find the opportunity to play an active role in the compelling conversation that takes place between the text and ourselves, a conversation that has been going on since these megillot were written. To truly play a part in this exchange, we must first have a full familiarity with - and a deep understanding of - the text, as well as a sincere desire to enter into the ongoing dialogue. By so doing, these ancient megillot - which were written in the context of a specific historical, literary and cultural period - become a meaningful source for the contemporary age on a national and personal level. Grappling with these sources demands both intellectual and spiritual effort, nevertheless, the result of such an effort is an extraordinary connection with the grandeur of the text of the Torah itself. This commentary endeavors to focus on the basic concepts of each megillah, to discover the classical concepts in Jewish thought and tradition whose sources are found in it, and to examine its application to our own day. Furthermore a concerted effort is made to uncover the role that the megillot play in current poetry and music as they appear in modern Hebrew.
