The National Library Readers Association invites librarians in Israel and abroad who care about the future of the National Library (JNUL)--presently in the process of splitting off from the Hebrew University--to join our ranks. We are concerned about the interim period until the development and construction of a new National Library. We also seek a say in the projected character of the future National Library.
Formed in 2004, the association now numbers some 230 members. Our main aim is twofold: (1) to gain representation for the public on the public committee responsible for running the library and to have reader input in the process of developing a new National Library, and (2) to ensure the maintenance of the National Librarys status as an outstanding academic library. Other, related aims include bringing the importance of the library to public attention and lobbying for the creation of a National Library that meets the needs of the public and of researchers in this age of the information explosion. There is a crying need for adequate government funding and we are prepared to lobby the government to this end. We also favor high accessibility to the resources at the library by the general public. At present, in order to have more clout, we seek to recruit additional members. On our agenda: meetings with the public committee running the library and with the Knesset Education committee, and the airing of the librarys situation and of the publics requirements in the media.
