Here's another way: I created a Self Check-Out Form. Patrons must fill in the date, their name, the title of the book and the barcode number. The first 4 numbers of all our barcodes are the same, so to make it easier for them to fill in the barcode number, the form includes those first 4. They have to fill in the rest. I ask for title to ensure that they match up. If not, I can usually look up the correct barcode number. These blank forms are kept on a clipboard with a pen attached, on my desk, facing out to patrons. The form suggests they fill in the due date and I have included the loan period on the form. It has worked well. This form has also been handy for book displays at events and/or when I take books to a classroom for special programming.
I have also posted a "stop sign" on the door asking if they have remembered to check out their books. Toby Harris, Librarian Temple De Hirsch Sinai 1522 E.
