Hador: The Hebrew Annual of America

Histadruth Ivrith of America, the Hebrew Language and Cultural
Association in the U.S., was one of the oldest Jewish organizations
in America. Launched in 1916, it germinated many glorious endeavors
into Hebrew/American culture. Among the many achievements of the
Histadruth Ivrith were its publishing house (Ogen), a teachers'
seminary, a Hebrew Academy, and a youth movement. The Histadruth
Ivrith conducted yearly classes in continuing education for teachers
of Hebrew language and literature and Jewish studies.

Histadruth Ivrith closed in 2004 due to financial difficulties. When
it closed, it had three publications: "Lamishpaha", launched in
1963, a magazine for students of intermediate Hebrew; "Sulam Yaakov",
a magazine for children; and, "Hadoar" - its flagship
publication. During the life of "Hadoar" (1921-2004), the frequency
of publication changed. It was published as a daily, a weekly, a
bi-weekly and a quarterly. "Hadoar" played an important role in the
lives of authors, educators, poets, Hebrew scholars, scholars of
Jewish studies, and the general readership.

The last editor of "Hadoar" (2002-2004) was Lev Hakak, a Professor of
Hebrew language and literature at the University of California, Los
Angeles. Professor Hakak announced his plan to publish Hador: the
Hebrew Annual of America. As a publication of Hebrew authors in
America, it would include poetry, prose, book reviews, articles about
Israel, and articles about Hebrew and Jewish studies. It would also
have Hebrew literature, Hebrew language, Jewish art, Jewish
education, and would be focused on the Jewish community in America.

Dr. Aviva Barzel and Dr. Shmuel Schneider were among the most
important active figures in the Histadruth Ivrith of America, and
they remained on the Editorial Board of Hador: The Hebrew Annual of
America. Professor Benjamin Harshav from Yale University joined the
Editorial Board. Dr. Harshav was awarded the Emet Prize for 2005,
the highest prize awarded in Israel for achievements in art, science
and culture.

The first volume of Hador: The Hebrew Annual of America (over 200
pages, Hardcover) was recently published. The volume presents the
contributions of more than fifty Professors and other gifted authors
who contributed to the
project
.

The price per copy is $30.00 including S&H. You may contact Professor
Hakak by email or by mail (see below) or call him at (310) 276-4732.
