Dear Librarians,

NEW BOOK RECOMMENDATION

A PORTABLE GOD: THE ORIGIN OF JUDAISM AND CHRISTIANITY
Risa Levitt Kohn and Rebecca Moore
Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, 2007
www.rowmanlittlefield.com

This book considers the nascent traditions that eventually solidify
and become Judaism and Christianity. The authors argue that these two
faiths share their origins in the precepts and concepts of Israelite
religion, although adherents make adaptations to fit the new
historical realities in which they are living. In other words, Judaism
does not precede Christianity: They both arise together. This is not
an entirely new idea in contemporary Jewish and Christian studies.
What is new is the authors' concentration on the ways in which
Israelite religion is transformed in the so-called Second Temple
period. The areas of focus are the "location" of God, the roles of
sacrifice and the priesthood and the interpretive authority.

Risa Levitt Kohn is professor of Hebrew Bible and Judaism and director
of the Jewish Studies Program at San Diego State University. She has
lectured extensively on the Hebrew Bible, Jewish and Christian origins
and the Dead Sea Scrolls. She is the curator of the Dead Sea Scrolls
exhibit currently in San Diego and a contributor to "The Torah, A
Women's Commentary".

Rebecca Moore is associate professor and chair of the Religious
Studies Department at San Diego State University. Her research focuses
on Jewish and Christian dialogue and on the history of biblical
interpretation.
