POSITION SUMMARY
The University of Southern California (USC) Libraries seek an
energetic, innovative, and
committed social sciences librarian, with primary responsibility for
gerontology and
secondary responsibility for other social science subject areas as
assigned. The successful
candidate will participate in a full range of library services,
including reference,
instruction, collection development and management, and outreach. The
Gerontology
Librarian will provide quality customer service, work collaboratively with other
librarians and staff to provide collections and services to the
university, and will partner
closely with the Davis School of Gerontology and the Andrus Gerontology Center.
Library services to distance learners are an important component of
this position. The
candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional
development activities,
professional associations and/or sections of associations devoted to gerontology
librarianship.

GERONTOLOGY LIBRARY
The Gerontology Library, located in the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center,
maintains a collection of research materials on the study of aging and
the aged, primarily
focused on the sociological, psychological and physical aspects of
aging. It houses
approximately 20,000 volumes of books, 120 journal subscriptions, 300
newsletter titles,
and over 1,000 videos as well as access to a rich array of USC's
subscribed electronic

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program, and a BA in a social science
discipline. At least two years experience in an academic or research
library, including
reference, instruction and collection development experience;
knowledge of the latest
technologies and trends in the field of academic
librarianship/gerontology. The position
requires a strong customer-service orientation; the ability to
interact effectively with
faculty, students, and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds; the
ability to work closely
with faculty in support of their research and instructional needs; the
ability to manage
multiple priorities and meet deadlines; familiarity with the latest
technology and trends in
the field of academic librarianship; demonstrated ability to work
collaboratively; and
excellent oral and written communication skills. The successful
candidate will have to
demonstrate an interest and involvement in providing contributions to
the field of
academic librarianship and/or gerontology.

Preferred: Additional MA/MS in gerontology or another social sciences
discipline;
experience with building, managing, and accessing gerontology
collections; experience in
delivering library services in support of distance learning programs;
familiarity with
Medline; and experience with web-authoring software.

APPOINTMENT RANK/SALARY
Librarian II or III: Continuing appointment rank and salary commensurate with
experience and qualifications, minimum starting salary $50,000.
Librarians at USC have faculty status. Appointment to the Continuing
Appointment track
requires the potential to meet the University's requirements for the
granting of continuing
appointment, which in turn requires demonstrated excellence in librarianship and
substantive and continuing contributions to the profession.
