In Search of American Jewish Heritage
18th Annual David W. Belin Lecture in American Jewish Affairs
Beth Wenger, Katz Family Term Chair of Jewish History
Director of Jewish Studies, University of Pennsylvania
Date: Thursday, March 6, 2008
Time: 7 pm
Place: Palmer Commons, Forum Hall,
100 Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor

When Jews arrived in the United States, they found themselves in a
country that offered unprecedented freedoms and opportunities, but no
Jewish past. As new generations of Jews settled, they invented new
renditions of Jewish history suited to the United States.

In the Eighteenth David W. Belin Lecture in American Jewish Affairs,
Beth Wenger explores the ways that Jews wrote America into Jewish
history and Jews into American history, shaping a distinct cultural heritage.

Professor Wenger is the author of New York Jews and the Great
Depression: Uncertain Promise (Yale University Press) which was
awarded the Salo Baron Prize in Jewish History from the American
Academy of Jewish Research. She is also the author of The Jewish
Americans: Three Centuries of Jewish Voices in America (Doubleday
Press, 2007), which was named a National Jewish Book Award finalist.
The Jewish Americans is the companion volume to the six-hour PBS
documentary broadcast earlier this year.

A reception follows the lecture. Free and open to students, faculty,
and the general public.
