POSITION:      Area Studies Cataloger
DEPARTMENT: Bibliographic Services
DIVISION:      Technical Services and Resource Management
REPORTS TO: Head, Bibliographic Services Department

JOB SUMMARY:  Performs original and complex copy cataloging and 
classification of monographs and serials using Voyager, Dewey Decimal 
Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and the 
Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition revised. Specializes in 
support of area studies. Titles cataloged are added to the Melville 
J. Herskovits Library of African Studies and other collections of 
Northwestern University Library.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Using Voyager (an integrated library system) and 
OCLC, performs original or complex copy cataloging of monographs and 
serials in all formats and on any subject. Most works are handled 
without benefit of any matching or variant copy. Authority work is 
performed at the local or national level, as appropriate. Catalogs 
materials to be added to the collections of the Melville J. 
Herskovits Library of African Studies as a primary assignment. Also 
catalogs materials for other collections of the Northwestern 
University Library. Working closely with the Middle Eastern Studies 
Librarian and other staff to support the development of a Middle 
Eastern area studies collection, helps monitor and performs quality 
control on the outsourced cataloging of Arabic and related  language 
material. Provides occasional Romanization assistance or assistance 
with other technical services processes. May perform occasional 
cataloging of Arabic or other Middle Eastern language materials. 
Leads in the identification, analysis, and resolution of issues 
related to the cataloging of materials in non-Roman alphabet 
languages. Serves as a resource/contact person for other Library 
staff on these issues. Participates in the planning and development 
of non-MARC metadata arrangements for digital projects, particularly 
projects supporting increased access to area studies collections. 
Participates in national cooperative cataloging programs such as the 
Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and OCLC Enhance.  Keeps 
abreast of current cataloging issues and trends. Participates in 
appropriate professional development, continuing education, 
professional service, or research activities. Performs other area 
studies duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: NU is seeking a production-oriented flexible and 
creative problem-solver with a strong personal commitment to 
responsive and innovative service. REQUIRED:  Master's degree in 
library and information science or equivalent combination of 
education and relevant library experience. Strong knowledge of French 
required. Academic knowledge sufficient to perform subject analysis 
in a range of relevant modern European foreign languages. Broad 
educational background. Facility with database searching and network 
navigation tools. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and 
in writing. Ability to flourish in a changing work environment. 
Knowledge of MARC formats and national cataloging standards.

PREFERRED: two years professional cataloging experience using an 
automated system in an academic library (including significant 
original cataloging experience). Experience cataloging for an area 
studies program such as Africana or Middle Eastern Studies. Academic 
background in African or Middle Eastern studies desirable. Experience 
with or interest in non-Roman alphabet cataloging 
challenges.  Knowledge of Arabic strongly preferred; other European 
or East Asian languages helpful.
