TWO NEW DOCUMENTARIES FROM RUTH DISKIN FILMS
ILLUMINATE THE RICH DIVERSITY OF JEWISH HISTORY
Dear Librarian/Professor,
The discovery of authentic Jewish communities is at the center of
these two documentaries. ABOUT SUGARCANE AND HOMECOMING and THE FIRE
WITHIN both explore areas in South America where Jews settled
centuries ago, escaping persecution and seeking a new life. Many of
these people secretly lived as Jews – while others were not aware of
their heritage, but maintained customs that link them to their Jewish
past. In Iquitos, Peru and in cities around Northern Brazil we meet
remarkable individuals and families who are acutely aware of their
unique practices and their singular link to a rich past.
ABOUT SUGARCANE AND HOMECOMING (54 min. 2008) allows us a peek at a
group of individuals who all hold the conviction that they are
descendants of Jews forced to convert to Catholicism after the
expulsion from Spain in 1492. In Portugal the Jews were forced to
convert to Catholicism in 1497. They were called "New Christians".
Many of these "New Christians" found refugee in Brazil far from the
inquisition and started the sugar trade. Some of them continued to
practice the Jewish faith in secret. They were pejoratively called
"Marranos" (pigs). For further information, please check:

THE FIRE WITHIN (60 min, 2008) is the story of the unique Jewish
community of Iquitos, Peru. In the late 19th century, following the
great rubber boom, Jewish men from Morocco settled in the isolated
town of Iquitos. There, they married indigenous women, raised
families, and maintained Jewish names. Their original Jewish
traditions became mixed with indigenous Amazonian life creating an
authentic and practically unknown Jewish tradition. For further
information, please check:
