I have read and can recommend highly the following books for young people.
They are all in paperback

1.Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate
Depicts the survival and resettlement in Minnesota of young Africans from
Darfur or Somalia-like conflicts
2. Under the Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Fisher Staples
Young girl survives bombardment of her family farm in Afghanistan and
escapes to Pakistan where she goes to school.
3. 3 cups of Tea , Greg Mortenson.
Pakistan and Afghanistan. Memoir. There is now a young reader's edition
which I have not seen.
4. Storyteller's Beads by Jane Kurtz
Ethiopian Jewish children survive civil war in Ethiopia and escape to
Israel.
