Could you be thinking of the Aleph-Bet Story Book by Deborah Pessin, published by JPS. The stories are not about how each letter got its name, but there's a story for each letter that relates to its name. The first one is about creation. As the book progresses through the aleph-bet, the stories go through the Tanakh and later Midrash. Even if it's not the book you're looking for, you'll like it.
