This past Shabbat, the 60th anniversary of the Minnie Cobey Memorial Library of Congregation Tifereth Israel was celebrated at a special Library Shabbat. The library committee worked on the planning and organizing of the event for six months: selecting and inviting an author to speak after Kiddush; finding funding; gaining various approvals and cooperation from synagogue staff; writing publicity material; planning a menu; creating table centerpieces with books and ribbon; and so much more.
The committee was given an aliya and members participated in the service by reading Torah and various prayers. The rabbi said kind words about the library and many of the congregants stayed to hear our author, National Jewish Book Award Winner, Michael J. Rosen (Elijah's Angel). I'm pleased to report that the event was a success. I'm hoping that the event has elevated the library's profile and status because the synagogue board will be meeting soon to vote on budget cuts.
