As a result, librarians, or information professionals, are consolidating traditional librarian responsibilities with duties related to evolving technology and broader community outreach. Librarians assist patrons in locating information and use it proficiently for personal and professional objectives. Librarians need to be knowledgeable of a vast array of scholarly and public information resources and have to follow trends and advancements in publishing, digital and other media to direct the selection and organization of materials. Librarians need to direct staff and volunteers to develop and design information programs and systems that will be used by the community, making sure that all information is displayed in a user friendly way. They will collaborate with many other organizations to reach the goals and plans of the Tycher Library and the Dallas Jewish community at large. The overarching goal of the Tycher Library as a result of a strategic planning process completed in 2009 is to strengthen the Tycher Library as a vibrant Jewish communal resource that engages the broad Jewish community in a personal exploration of Jewish culture and learning and to raise awareness and usage of the Tycher Library. Description of Position: The Library Director has the primary responsibility of conducting and managing all library functions in order to maintain optimum performance of the Tycher Library as a resource and information center for the Jewish community. There are three main areas for which they will be responsible. · User Services - - Community outreach with congregations; educational institutions and individuals - Strategy development for improving library services and policies - Ensuring a user friendly environment - Market the materials of the Library to the community through electronic and other media - Assist patrons with library resources - Plan programs including but not limited to the Community Read, Spring Lecture and book clubs. - Create content and update Tycher Library webpage in all arenas where it is located · Administrative Services - Program development - Budget development and oversight - Strategy development to promote the services and resources of the library to meet present and future needs as well as supervising and ensuring its successful implementation - Research, draft and recommend library policies to the Executive Director of the Center for Jewish Education (CJE). - Organize and maintain library materials in accordance with the collection development policy, including online access - Conduct periodic inventory and eliminates outdated material. - Recruit, interview, supervise and evaluate all library staff. - Develop strong collaborations with other regional libraries (public and private), the Jewish Community Center and other educational institutions to promote collections, apply for grants, plan joint programming etc. - Recruit, schedule and oversee effective use of volunteers - Solicit Friends of the Library. - Collaborate with other Jewish libraries on programming, author visits, etc. - Convene and staff the Dallas Jewish Librarians group. - Support the overall activities of the CJE as needed · Technical Services o Collection development o Evaluate, select, purchase and catalog all print, audio-visual and electronic materials, supplies and equipment in a timely manner. - Conduct formal and informal outreach to the community to identify print and audio-visual needs and preferences o Stay abreast of trends and needed skills through professional reading and continuing education opportunities. o The Library Director reports to the Executive Director of the Center for Jewish Education (CJE). This is a full time position (40 hours per week) with some evening and weekend work required. - Library experience required. Master of Library Science preferred, advanced degree in a related field will be considered. - Strong Jewish knowledge required. - Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook. - Experience with and understanding of the structure of online databases and search strategies as they pertain to the needs of the CJE and Federation, including the ability to adapt new technologies as needed. - Experience and expertise in all areas of library services and library administration. - Exceptional interpersonal skills, both verbally and in writing for one-on-one and group environments - Knowledge of literature and film with significance to our literary community.
