International Conference at the Efrata College of Education, Jerusalem

24 November 2011 : That horrific summer : 70 years since the
annihilation of Lithuanian Jewish communities

CALL FOR PAPERS

The summer of 1941 marked the beginning of the systematic
annihilation of entire Jewish communities by the Nazi
regime. Following the German invasion of Lithuania, the provincial
towns and cities there became early targets for this policy. Jews
were herded into ghettos and shot to death in pits adjacent to the
towns, by both Nazis and those local residents referred to as their
"accessories" in crime. To note the events of that horrific summer
and fall, and in memory of those murdered, the Efrata College of
Education will host an international academic conference devoted to
the annihilation of the Jewish communities of Lithuania during the
summer and fall of 1941. The conference committee seeks proposals in
various fields, including, but not exclusively, those focusing on
history, literature, Jewish thought, facets of memory.

Among the suggested topics:

• Lithuanian Jewry prior to the Holocaust

• Lithuanian Jewry during the Holocaust

• Jewish resistance, escape and rescue in Lithuania

• Initiatives and participation of Lithuanian citizens in the
decrees and murder of Jews

• Religious responses and rabbinic leadership in Lithuania

• Holocaust memory in Lithuania

This one-day conference of lectures, as well as visual and artistic
representations on related topics, will be held on
Thursday, 24 November 2011 at the Efrata College of Education in Jerusalem.
An edited volume is planned, based on selected papers presented,
following academic review.

You are invited to send a 350 word abstract, including title,
together with a short CV, to Bat-Sheva Mazuz, secretary for the
conference (bat-she...@macam.ac.il) by June 2, 2011. All proposals
will be peer-reviewed.

Academic steering committee: Dr. Ben-Tsiyon Klibansky, Prof. Yisrael
