Dear colleagues:

What a disappointment for me! As a retired librarian whose library
career spans more than sixty years in a variety of libraries I was
hoping for a cogent "defense of libraries in the 21st century."
Instead I get a praise of the fascinating memorabilia which can be
viewed at the NY Public Library. How does that help us ordinary
librarians who labor in the many libraries all over our country and
must convince politicians to let us have enough funds to maintain our
institutions to serve the folks living in our neighborhood and to
persuade the young people growing up to be citizens and voters that
not all wisdom can be found on the internet and in Wikipedia.
And besides I recall how I came to America in 1939, fleeing from the
Nazis, having no money and desperately needing and wanting to become
fluent in English. The public library branch in our neighborhood was
my source of books. I could read and read and it did not cost me
anything! True, that was way before the internet and TV, but there
are still people - like me in 1939 - who need the resources that are
available without charge in our public libraries. Let's not forget that.

Susanne Batzdorff, Santa Rosa, CA.
