PART-TIME ARCHIVIST

Temple Israel of Boston seeks an experienced professional for a 
part-time archivist position. This position is funded at a one day 
per week for 2011-2012, but additional funding may become available 
in the future. The Temple Israel Archives documents the synagogue's 
150 year history and includes the records of its clergy, lay leaders, 
religious school, auxiliaries, and administrative offices, in 
addition to other materials related to congregants. Temple Israel, 
located in Boston's Longwood Area, is New England's largest and 
second oldest Reform congregation. The synagogue, which has more than 
1300 member families, operates an active pre-school and religious 
school and offers many educational, collegial, and social action 
programs for adults. The synagogue maintains a museum and a library 
staffed by a full-time librarian.



Responsibilities: The archivist is responsible for developing 
archival policies and procedures, accessioning and processing 
material, records management, cataloging, and preservation. The 
archivist is also responsible for providing reference services for 
temple administrators, congregants, and the general public. Other 
duties include performing research for occasional museum exhibitions 
and educational programs, managing an oral history program, 
supervising volunteers, and maintaining the archives' webpage.



Qualifications: Masters degree in archives management, history, 
library science, or related field. Previous archival experience, 
including the processing of large institutional records collections. 
Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory and practice. 
Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and 
collaboratively. Ability to lift a 40-lb. box. Some experience with 
digital preservation, EAD, cataloging, and museum work a plus.



Salary: $20 per hour.



Start date: Mid to late summer.
