In my experience, it isn't wise to bring much cash at all. I suggest using your ATM card, at a bank in Canada. Even with whatever fee is charged, you are much more likely to get a better exchange rate than what you would get in the US, and you have the safety benefit of not carrying wads of cash. That is the cash-travel strategy I have used for years, and it seems to work well.
