Marga, I was going to recommend The Only One Club, but, while I believe in books as an educational tool, in this case a simple explanation will be enough for a 5 years old. I live in the South where we are a small minority. The schools cannot accommodate children with food allergies, diabetes or those who keep the Kashrut laws. The child will be happy to know that, when his classmates stand in line for lunch, he can sit and enjoy the lunch that Mon made just for him. I like Rachel’s idea for the mother to use Tough questions Jews ask to help the parents better articulate their observance. Shabbat shalom, Amalia Warshenbrot

Duck for Turkey Day by Jacqueline Jules >From the author's website: It's almost Thanksgiving, and Tuyet is excited about the holiday and the vacation from school. There's just one problem: her Vietnamese American family is having duck for Thanksgiving dinner -- not turkey! Nobody has duck for Thanksgiving -- what will her teacher and the other kids think? To her surprise, Tuyet enjoys her yummy Thanksgiving dinner anyhow -- and an even bigger surprise is waiting for her at school on Monday. Dinners from roast beef to lamb to enchiladas adorned the Thanksgiving tables of her classmates, but the celebrations all had something in common -- family! I was sold on it when I saw that one of the classmates mentioned having tofu for Thanksgiving.
