Karaite Jews make up but a fraction of today's Jewish population, with
estimates of their worldwide numbers ranging from 30,000 to 80,000 individuals.
Karaite Judaism is characterized by its adherence to the Hebrew Scriptures
(Tanakh) as the sole source of divine instruction to the Jewish people. In that
regard, it is markedly different from Rabbanite Judaism, the most commonly
practiced form of Judaism today. Rabbanite Judaism believes in the divine
authority of non-biblical works, such as the Talmud. Shawn Joe Lichaa will
discuss important Karaite texts, the Karaite approach to biblical exegesis, and
the rich tradition comprising the daily observance of Karaite Jews.
