I urge all of us not to focus on the Texas "bookless" library but, instead,
read carefully this article posted by our AJL Mentor Chair, Stephanie Gross
(see below), which I've copied to our AJL-Southern California website -
www.ajlsc.org/news.html.

The original article, released 1/22/2013, is titled:
"Library Services in the Digital Age
"Patrons embrace new technologies – and would welcome more.
But many still want printed books to hold their central place"
by Kathryn Zickuhr, Lee Rainie and Kristen Purcell.
I think there is much in the article you'll want to quote to your
powers-that-be who make library decisions in your institution. This is
published by the respected "Pew Research Center, a nonprofit 'fact tank' that
provides information on the issues, attitudes, and trends shaping America and
the world, and is partially funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation."
Read the entire Summary, then read the links to the many parts of the Report on
Stephen's Lighthouse, a blog by Stephen Abram, "illuminating library industry
trends, innovation and information."

I was very pleased to see that the Los Angeles Times considered this important:
Front page - "Not Dead Yet: Libraries Still Vital, Pew Report Finds," by David
L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times Book Critic, January 22, 2013.
<http://www.latimes.com/features/books/jacketcopy/la-et-jc-pews-report-on-libraries-is-upbeat-20130119,0,1014616.story>

AND, if you google "Library Services in the Digital Age," you'll find many more
articles happily reporting this.

Thank you, Stephanie, for alerting us to this, and for your many posts of great
interest on Hasafran.

Barbara
