I agree. It's worth discussion--what is the difference between
redemption and atonement.
OK. This is how I see it (you are all invited to thresh this to chaff if
you feel the urge):
Remember the story about this guy who bends Hillel's ear on and on and
on about something he did to this other guy and how badly he feels abou
it bla de bla de bla? Hillel listens to all this blather and after
looking at his Hermione-Granger sand-watch says: "Enough, already! I get
it! Now get outta here and go fix it with the guy you screwed over;
he'll get it, too... maybe... probably.. I don't know... but one thing
is cotton-picken sure, you won't know unless you schlep on over there
and give it a shot."
Atonement: The Guy was recognising his wrong-doings and spilling his
guts out to Hillel.
Redemption, from the verb "to redeem": Hillel says to go fix it. Pay the
piper so to speak, shell out the ransome to put things right side up
between you and the person you trashed..
Another example might be a shot-gun wedding.
The atonement words of the young man to the father with the shot gun
are: "Sir, I admit that it was I, (Atonement), and I plan on doing right
by your daughter before you, the world and God." To which the future
father-in-law lowers the barrel and says: "Damn, straight." (Redemption)
Yom Kipur is the last word in Redemption/Atonement.
Take time to recognise that you're a total goof (Atonement, the whole
month of Elul)
Manage to get through 10 days of asking everybody's forgiveness and
setting things right (Redemption with a time limit)
KolNidre/Yom Kipur: convince everybody that you really mean it.
