Baumgardserved for 35 years as the founding Rabbi of Temple Beth Am, Pinecrest, Florida. While serving in that capacity, he also served as the President of the Synagogue Council of America, the President of the Community Relations Board of Miami-Dade County, President of the Alumni Association of the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, among many other positions. Ordained at the HUCJIR in 1950, Rabbi Baumgard earned his doctorate in Hebrew Letters at that institution in 1956. He also attended the Department of Ancient Semitic Civilization and Language for four years at Columbia University and studied at the Union Theological Seminar as part of that program. His doctoral thesis was written under the supervision of Dr. Harry Orlinsky, PhD, editor-in-chief of the Translation of the Hebrew Bible, 1962.
