LC/MARC distinguishes between Classical Syriac [syc] and Modern Syriac [syr]. Can someone please explain how one distinguishes between the two? Is it simply based on date of writing/copying (in case of manuscripts) or date of actual composition -- and if so, what is the cut-off? -- or (in addition?) on the subject of the text? Or some other characteristic?
